Carl Raab's three Swedish ships of the line faced six Russian ships of the line, five frigates, and two brigs. The Swedish flagship grounded, freed itself, and rejoined the fight. Three pursuing Russian ships then grounded in the same area, and one could not be recovered and had to be burned. Peter I's demand for both effort and victory helps explain why his officers pushed the pursuit so hard. Frigates could have followed the grounded opponent and prevented its escape without exposing heavy ships of the line to the same shallow-water hazard.
