HMS Wren in Walker’s Second Support Group

Wren’s service with Captain Johnnie Walker’s Second Support Group demonstrates the striking power of a dedicated anti-submarine hunting formation.

Notes

HMS Wren joined Captain Johnnie Walker's Second Support Group, described here as arguably the most successful Allied anti-submarine group of the war. Its active hunting mission gave the ships a different role from escorts tied closely to a convoy screen. On 30 July 1943 the group engaged and destroyed three U-boats in a single day. The example shows what trained crews, coordinated surface ships, and a dedicated support-group mission could achieve against concentrated submarine targets.
