Warspite served on the Pacific Station from 1890 to 1893, then acted as guard ship at Queenstown until 1896 before returning to the Pacific as station flagship. Her command passed through several officers as the station's flag leadership changed. When the newer Edgar-class cruiser HMS Grafton arrived in 1902, Rear Admiral Andrew Bickford transferred his flag and retained his flag captain. Captain John Locke Marx, who had brought Grafton to the station, instead took the older Warspite home by way of Bahia, São Vicente, and Cape Verde. The ship paid off at Chatham into dockyard reserve for emergency use before being sold and sent to Preston for breaking up.
