Why preserving HMS Warrior tells a different naval story

A reflection on Portsmouth's preserved ironclad explains why a ship without battle honours can be historically as revealing as a famous combat veteran.

Notes

HMS Warrior and HMS Victory represent two different models of naval preservation. Victory is inseparable from the battles fought aboard her, whereas Warrior survives as evidence of a technological transformation in hulls, armour, propulsion, and naval architecture. Her lack of combat service is part of the interpretation rather than a weakness. A hot Trent Affair might have given Warrior a battle record, but the preserved ship instead represents the deterrent power and rapid change of her era. Walking her decks therefore helps visitors study how navies modernize as well as how individual engagements are won.
