Why HMS Warrior reveals a navy in transition

HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, and HMS Africa illuminate both a naval high point and the harder work of technological transition.

Notes

Victory survives as a representation of the Royal Navy at the height of the sailing battle fleet. HMS Warrior is especially revealing because the ship captures an institution managing its transition from wooden sailing warships toward steam and iron. Warrior is valuable as material evidence of adaptation as well as a famous hull. If one more Age of Sail warship could survive, the 64-gun HMS Africa would reveal a less iconic but operationally storied side of the sailing navy.
