Walker came close to catching U-47 in July 1940 after the submarine sank Arandora Star. The transport was carrying German and Italian prisoners to Canada in the account given here. The encounter damaged Walker sufficiently to require repairs from July to September, after which she returned to the Western Approaches. U-47 had already become known for sinking Royal Oak at Scapa Flow, giving this unsuccessful pursuit a connection to an earlier major Royal Navy loss.
