Walker commissioned into the 11th Destroyer Flotilla and appears to have spent most of her World War I service with the Grand Fleet. Accounts also place her with Harwich Force, although the sequence of those detachments is difficult to reconstruct precisely. The V and W design suited both assignments: the ships had effective gun and torpedo batteries, enough manoeuvrability for torpedo attacks, and sufficient stability for gun action. Walker's service largely consisted of routine duty without conspicuous honours. Minelaying facilities and other modifications made further use of the design's available space.
