HMS United spent most of her war in the Mediterranean, sinking the Italian destroyer Bombardiere, a submarine chaser, and other shipping. She also covered the Allied invasion of Sicily during Operation Husky. During that operation, United sank the Italian transport submarine Remo while it was on the surface. This was an unusual submarine-on-submarine encounter, although it was not an underwater kill.
