HMS Unicorn was already under construction before the war as a forward aviation-support ship with a flight deck and carrier capability. The design could maintain and repair aircraft while accompanying a fleet away from home bases. Its combination of support facilities and operational flying capacity also anticipated features later associated with light fleet carriers. Unicorn therefore adds another prewar example of investment in the infrastructure around carrier aviation.
