Turbulent served for about fifteen months between commissioning and loss. She sank more than 90,000 tons and survived roughly 250 enemy depth-charge attacks, although the exact cause and date of her sinking remain uncertain. Her victims included sailing vessels, merchant ships, a destroyer, a submarine tender, and a tanker. The attack on Nino Bixio also killed hundreds of Allied prisoners being transported aboard, showing how submarine attacks on military shipping could carry tragic consequences not visible to the attacker. As a later T-class boat, Turbulent carried forward and stern external tubes, seventeen torpedoes, a four-inch gun, and additional anti-aircraft weapons, giving her more all-around striking options than the earliest boats.
