Rees had commanded L26, HMS Tribune, and HMS Seawolf before taking HMS Tuna. His patrol experience included reporting Tirpitz's position accurately enough for HMS Victorious to launch a carrier strike in March 1942. On the same patrol he fired stern torpedoes at what he believed was a surfacing U-boat, although the absence of wreckage prevented a confirmed kill. That combination of navigation, reconnaissance, and aggressive submarine handling made him a credible commander for Frankton's demanding coastal insertion.
