While escorting PQ 13, Trinidad damaged the German destroyer Z26 and launched torpedoes. One ran far below its intended 46 knots, and the cruiser crossed its path during a zigzag. The explanation offered is a cold-related fault, possibly involving a partially blocked motor, rather than a circular torpedo run. The hit killed 32 men, and Trinidad reached Murmansk after being towed clear of the action. Repairs left her limited to 20 knots for the voyage home. A bomb then struck near the earlier damage and started a serious fire, killing 63 people, including 20 survivors from Edinburgh. Matchless scuttled Trinidad on 15 May 1942.
