Why scrapping HMS Tiger without replacement mattered

Tiger's speed, robust construction, and place among Britain's fast capital ships made her disposal more consequential than a simple reduction in treaty tonnage.

Notes

HMS Tiger stands out among the ships sacrificed under the treaty as a particularly costly British disposal. Tiger still combined roughly 28-knot speed with heavier construction than the Renown-class ships and may even have been more heavily built than HMS Hood. Subdivision and internal protection matter to that comparison, not armour thickness alone. Scrapping her reduced the Royal Navy from four fast capital ships to three without authorizing a replacement. Even a one-off successor could have preserved design and yard capacity while giving the later wartime fleet a valuable fast unit.
