After HMS Thrasher sank a heavily escorted supply ship, depth charges and aircraft bombs left two unexploded bombs lodged in her casing. Lieutenant Peter Roberts and Petty Officer Thomas Gould entered the cramped, dark space to drag them out despite not knowing their type or condition. Moving the second bomb produced alarming mechanical noises. The submarine might have had to crash-dive while they were outside the pressure hull, which would have left them to drown.
