HMS Tamar as a modern presence ship

Forward-deployed HMS Tamar sustains Indo-Pacific relationships at lower cost while representing stronger Royal Navy forces available elsewhere.

Notes

Forward-deployed HMS Tamar visits British territories and regional partners, exercises with local navies, and keeps relationships active between larger deployments. During 2023, her itinerary included the British Indian Ocean Territory, exercises with Sri Lanka, waters off China, and operations in the South Pacific. She represents the combat power that Britain can send if a situation escalates, while the strongest regional opponents would require heavier forces. A service-common 40 mm gun would impose less support and maintenance than a 57 mm weapon while fitting the ship's actual mission. Wartime additions could support uncrewed aviation, dipping sonar, anti-submarine work, or minelaying without distorting her peacetime role as a persistent diplomatic presence.
