HMS Swallow approaches Bartholomew Roberts's careening squadron under a Portuguese flag and behaves like a vulnerable merchant ship. Roberts sends one vessel after the apparent prize. Swallow draws it beyond sight and hearing of land, reveals her armament, and captures it. She then returns with the captured vessel, briefly making it look as though the pirates are bringing home a prize before the fight in which Roberts is killed. His earlier execution of a French governor had made him important enough for both British and French warships to pursue.
