HMS Scott is described as the Royal Navy's sole ocean survey vessel and an exceptionally capable floating sonar platform. A three-part crew organization allows two groups to operate the ship while the third rests, supporting as many as 300 days at sea each year. Her work after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake revealed that the event had dramatically altered seabed topography, and she later covered southern duties during the absence of Endurance. Much of the strategic value of Scott's collected data is unlikely ever to become fully public.
