HMS Scott maps the deep Atlantic for submarines

Scott's multibeam sonar and rotating crews sustain the detailed deep-ocean maps needed for safe high-speed submarine transit.

Notes

HMS Scott combines a powerful multibeam sonar with a three-section crewing model that can keep her deployed for roughly 300 days a year. Her system can survey an exceptionally large area of ocean floor each hour, turning endurance into sustained deep-water coverage. Her central strategic role is maintaining knowledge of deep Atlantic routes used by ballistic-missile and attack submarines. Accurate underwater charts matter because a submarine maneuvering quickly has little margin for an unmapped obstruction. The same sensor performance also makes Scott useful for finding devices or other objects placed on the seabed.
