A radar-equipped command ship for motor torpedo boats

SA and SL radar, Type 144 ASDIC, and medium- and high-frequency direction-finding equipment supported Rutherford's role as a coastal-forces command frigate.

Notes

Rutherford's sensor fit comprised SA and SL radar sets, Type 144 ASDIC, a medium-frequency (MF) direction-finding antenna, and a Type FH4 high-frequency (HF) direction-finding antenna. A coastal-forces command ship gathered information and passed it to the smaller motor torpedo boats, providing an information and coordination centre for the flotilla. The Royal Navy developed these frigates for that role and used the ships it had available. Destroyers sometimes took over because they often carried the same equipment and more, allowing a destroyer flotilla leader to fill the command role on particular operations. For this command work, sensors and information flow mattered more than armament.
