The Royal Navy did not automatically send every new ship to battle; Royal Sovereign stayed behind because its crew was not ready and Resolution was still fitting out. Revenge joined Marlborough, Hercules, and Agincourt in a mixed division whose older ships brought more experienced crews. Revenge and Royal Oak were deliberately separated so their powerful 15-inch batteries could reinforce different formations rather than concentrate in one inexperienced pair. Because the R class shared the 21- to 22-knot operating range of those divisions, the arrangement balanced firepower and experience without imposing the speed penalty that would have constrained a Queen Elizabeth.
