Renamed HMS Redoubtable, the former Revenge received torpedo bulges and bombarded German positions off the Flemish coast. She was not expected to join the Grand Fleet at Jutland or defeat modern dreadnoughts. Instead, her heavy guns were matched to a shore-bombardment mission in which speed and modern battle-line protection mattered less. Flooding one side increased the elevation available to her guns, a practical adaptation that extended their reach against land targets. The episode shows how a navy could extract combat value from an obsolete battleship by changing both its role and the way it used its surviving capabilities.
