Range and speed for an overseas flagship

Renown combined a 19-knot top speed with unusually long endurance, making a smaller battleship credible on distant stations.

Notes

The ship displaced 12,865 long tons at deep load and measured 125.7 metres overall, with a 22-metre beam and 8.3-metre draught. Eight cylindrical boilers supplied two triple-expansion engines on two shafts, producing 10,000 indicated horsepower and a top speed of 19 knots. Her 8,500-nautical-mile range at 15 knots greatly exceeded the Centurion class's 5,230 nautical miles at 10 knots and 17-knot top speed. This combination mattered more on distant stations than a simple main-gun comparison suggests. Renown could cross much greater distances at a useful cruising speed while retaining enough speed to operate with cruiser formations. Endurance and sustained speed gave a station flagship much of its strategic value.
