Rattler's value did not end with towing and efficiency comparisons. She served on anti-slavery patrol, captured the Brazilian slave brig Aleide in 1849, fought at Too Bay in 1855, and operated in the Second Anglo-Burmese War. Eleven years of commission showed that the experimental screw sloop could perform varied overseas duties. That operational record mattered because a laboratory success alone could not prove the maintenance and endurance of a new propulsion system.
