HMS Pelican's four U-boat actions and long service

Pelican helped destroy four U-boats, earned honours across several theatres, and remained useful through British Pacific Fleet and post-war service.

Notes

Pelican's anti-submarine record included four U-boat actions. She helped HMS Spey and HMS Leopard destroy U-136, sank U-438 with depth charges on her own, joined HMS Jed against U-334, and worked with HMCS Swansea against U-448, finishing that boat with depth charges and gunfire. Her battle honours covered Norway, the Atlantic, North Africa, Normandy, and the English Channel. Damage on passage east delayed her arrival and complicated whether she should also receive a British Pacific Fleet honour, even though she served with that fleet. Pelican later joined Second Frigate Flotilla patrols, remained in service until 1956, and was scrapped in 1958. Her career shows the tactical range and long service life that an adaptable sloop could deliver.
