Pasley, G9 and the consequences of mutual misidentification

G9's mistaken torpedo attack led Pasley to ram a friendly submarine, leaving one survivor to be rescued.

Notes

In 1917, G9 fired two torpedoes at Pasley while apparently believing the destroyer to be a German submarine. The reason for that misidentification remains unclear. One torpedo missed and the other failed to explode, after which Pasley turned hard over and rammed. The torpedo attack had led Pasley's crew to believe they too were facing an enemy submarine. Only one member of G9's crew survived, rescued by Able Seaman Henry Old, who entered the water with a running bowline and secured it around the surviving sailor. An inquiry followed. Having just come under torpedo attack, Pasley's crew had reason to treat the submarine as hostile.
