Chapter · 39:58-41:51

Pasley and the unsuccessful effort to bring Falmouth home

Seven destroyers and two tugs worked to save the torpedoed cruiser Falmouth, only to face another submarine attack.

Notes

Pasley, built by Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson, joined Negro and Pelican to assist the torpedoed light cruiser Falmouth after a fleet sweep. They tried to bring the damaged cruiser home. Four more destroyers from the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla reinforced them at about 23:00, and two tugs joined the following day. The recovery effort therefore involved seven destroyers and two tugs. Another submarine attack sank Falmouth after nearly a day of work, close to safety. The damaged cruiser remained vulnerable despite the substantial escort and towing effort.
