HMS Ocean was economized around a severe wartime life expectancy

Ocean's commercialized construction reflected an assumption that a helicopter assault ship reinforcing Norway might survive only one or two contested voyages.

Notes

HMS Ocean drew on the Invincible family but was built to a much cheaper commercialized standard. The design logic assumed that Soviet forces would concentrate heavily on any landing area used to reinforce Norway. Planners therefore expected the ship might be lost on its first voyage and at most complete two. Anticipated attrition could therefore drive procurement toward affordability rather than long combat endurance.
