Nubian kept the number 36 while her letter prefix changed from L to F and later G during the war. She displaced 1,921 tons standard, 71 tons above the stated 1,850-ton limit, and 2,559 tons deep. The hull measured 114.9 metres overall, with an 11.13-metre beam and a 3.343-metre draught, while the complement was 190. Three Admiralty three-drum boilers supplied two geared turbines and shafts with 44,000 shaft horsepower, giving a 36-knot design speed and a range of 5,700 nautical miles at 15 knots. Tribal captains nevertheless reported no trouble keeping pace with fast battlecruisers and carriers. Electrical provision built into the class eased radar installation, and the powered rotation arrangements could adapt equipment already used for beacons.
