The Tribals' torpedoes gave them offensive power, but Nubian and Mohawk filled a quieter role at Cape Matapan. They placed themselves between the cruiser scouting line and Admiral Cunningham's main force so visual signals could pass without exposing the fleet by radio. Their position allowed messages from either end of the cruiser line to reach the battlefleet. Admiral Iachino therefore remained unaware of Cunningham's location as the ambush developed. A destroyer could be tactically central while another force delivered the main blow.
