HMS Nubian was sent without accompanying troops to clear the small Mediterranean island of Linosa. The Italian garrison began surrendering while the destroyer circled the island, after which members of the crew went ashore to locate the commander. By the time the commander tried to negotiate, his garrison was already aboard the British ship. The episode resembles an age-of-sail small-ship action in which a warship's own company takes possession of an island. Destroyer actions also tend to be counted within campaigns, while battleship appearances are more readily called battles. That difference may help explain why exploits by smaller ships receive less attention.
