Nigeria survives Operation Pedestal and becomes INS Mysore

Nigeria's torpedo survival, Eastern Fleet service, and transfer to India trace the long utility of a Crown Colony cruiser.

Notes

As close-escort flagship during Operation Pedestal, Nigeria was torpedoed by the Italian submarine Axum but reached Gibraltar with three destroyers assisting her. The damage removed Nigeria from the escort and diverted three destroyers to protect her, while Admiral Harold Burrough had to transfer his flag to the destroyer Ashanti. Nine months of repair in the United States were followed by South African service, survivor recovery from the torpedoed merchantman James B. Stephens, and operations with the Eastern Fleet around Sumatra. Nigeria retained all four triple six-inch turrets throughout the war before X turret was removed during her 1954 reconstruction. Transfer to India as INS Mysore extended the hull's operational life until 1985 and included a damaging collision with the destroyer Hogue.
