Nigeria used high-frequency direction finding to help locate the German weather ship Lauenburg, whose abandoned code material was captured by a boarding party. As Force K's flagship she supported Operation Gauntlet around Spitsbergen and attacked German shipping before moving to the Mediterranean. The Italian submarine Axum torpedoed her during Operation Pedestal, forcing three destroyers to escort the damaged cruiser away and weakening the convoy escort by more than one ship. After American repairs, Nigeria rescued 30 survivors from the merchant ship James B. Stephens and joined Eastern Fleet raids on Sumatra. Modernized and transferred to India as Mysore, she later collided with HMS Hogue badly enough to damage the destroyer's bow and remained active until 1985.
