Commissioned in September 1940, Nigeria entered service soon enough that the class nearly took her name rather than Fiji's. She operated in northern waters with the destroyers Bedouin, Tartar, and Jupiter when HF/DF led the force to the German weather ship Lauenburg in fog. After coming under fire, the German crew abandoned ship before destroying all of its sensitive equipment. British boarders recovered codebooks and an Enigma machine, adding to the wider effort to exploit German naval communications. The capture came shortly after HMS Bulldog recovered a complete machine from U-110, so the intelligence gain depended on material taken in several operations rather than one famous incident.
