Chapter ยท 3:22:39-3:23:57

Newfoundland's Suez action against the Egyptian frigate Domiat

Domiat's refusal to stop led to a gun action with Newfoundland and Diana, followed by the rescue of 69 survivors.

Notes

Newfoundland encountered the Egyptian frigate Domiat south of the Suez Canal in 1956 and ordered her to stop. Domiat refused and opened fire, causing damage and casualties aboard the cruiser. Newfoundland and the destroyer Diana returned fire and sank the frigate, then rescued 69 survivors. One man aboard Newfoundland was killed and five were wounded. Domiat had previously served as HMS Nith, a River-class frigate. Newfoundland later returned to Far East service before her sale to Peru in 1959, where she became Almirante Grau and subsequently Capitan Quinones.
