Newfoundland's reconstruction and postwar East Indies duties

An extensive reconstruction prepared Newfoundland for duties ranging from crisis refuge in Ceylon to bombardment during the Malayan Emergency.

Notes

After reserve service and use with the stoker training establishment HMS Imperieuse, Newfoundland received a twenty-month reconstruction at Plymouth. She became flagship of the Fourth Cruiser Squadron on the East Indies Station. During the 1953 Hartal civil-disobedience campaign in Ceylon, the country's cabinet met aboard the cruiser as a secure location. After a Singapore refit she shelled Malayan National Liberation Army targets near Penang. A postwar cruiser could therefore serve as a headquarters, political refuge, and gunfire platform during the same commission.
