Newfoundland became flagship of the Fourth Cruiser Squadron in the East Indies. During the 1953 Hartal, widespread demonstrations and civil disobedience led Sri Lanka's cabinet to meet aboard her for security. After a three-month refit at Singapore, she transferred to the Far East Station. On the passage she shelled Malayan National Liberation Army targets near Penang.
