Chapter ยท 26:21-28:49

HMS Newcastle and the value of routine cruiser presence

Newcastle's quiet war consisted of distant-station patrols, a capture, and political-presence duties that spared larger warships.

Notes

Armstrong Whitworth appropriately built HMS Newcastle at Elswick, and her Parsons turbines reflected the machinery relationships of the yard that produced her. Her career included responses to disturbances associated with the Xinhai Revolution, pursuit of the raider Prinz Eitel Friedrich, the capture of a vessel operating as Edna, and long service in Asian waters. Much of her wartime employment lay on the China, Pacific, and East Indies stations rather than with the Grand Fleet. A capable cruiser on those stations covered routine patrol and political-presence duties without diverting a larger and more expensive warship.
