From HMS Shannon to a distant-station flagship

After HMS Shannon introduced the Royal Navy's armoured-cruiser type, Nelson embodied a concerted effort to build a capable flagship for a far-flung imperial station.

Notes

HMS Shannon was the Royal Navy's first armoured cruiser, and Nelson belonged to the transition from ironclad thinking towards that new type. Nelson also answered a specific overseas requirement: the Royal Navy wanted a ship able to represent British power far from the British Isles. That requirement combined seagoing endurance, military credibility, and the political visibility expected of a station flagship. Her design makes sense as an answer to overseas command and diplomacy as well as a step in cruiser development.
