HMS Moth is scuttled, recovered, and lost in Japanese service

HMS Moth's recovery after the fall of Singapore shows how denying a damaged vessel could fail and return a gunboat to war under a new flag.

Notes

HMS Moth was under repair when Singapore fell, and the British scuttled her to prevent capture. Japanese forces nevertheless recovered the gunboat and returned her to service as Suma. She survived until March 1945, when a mine sank her with the loss of eight crewmen. The sequence makes scuttling a concrete wartime logistics problem: a wreck was only denied to the enemy if damage, time, and local salvage capacity made recovery impractical.
