Escorting Olympic damaged the destroyers' engines

Marmion's escort of Olympic shows how matching a fast liner in difficult seas could damage destroyer machinery.

Notes

Marmion formed part of the escort for Olympic while the liner carried Arthur Balfour on his mission to America to obtain additional resources. Keeping up with the liner in the prevailing sea conditions badly damaged the destroyers' engines. Cruisers escorting liners in World War II later faced similar difficulties. Sustained liner operation and the demands for which warship engines were tuned could differ substantially.
