Marmion's rescue work after the Hoste and Negro collision

Marmion carried out escort duties for the Grand Fleet before becoming involved in the aftermath of an exercise collision in December 1916. The flotilla leader Hoste collided with the destroyer Negro. Marmion came alongside Negro and attempted assistance before turning to the recovery of sailors as the ship sank. Five officers and 45 ratings from Negro died. Marmion and Marvel then took the badly damaged Hoste in tow, but her crew eventually had to abandon her and she also sank. Preparing for war required demanding manoeuvres in training, with risks to ships and crews even without enemy action.
