Procurement cover for Dreadnought's new guns

Ordering Lord Nelson's familiar 12-inch turrets helped conceal and reduce the technical and procurement risk of Dreadnought's all-big-gun armament.

Notes

The Royal Navy ordered only two Lord Nelsons, unusually few beside earlier classes, but that small order helped make Dreadnought's procurement less conspicuous. The same 12-inch Mark X guns and turrets were already being built and fitted for the older-style ships. Dreadnought's five twin turrets represented enough gunhouses for roughly two to three Lord Nelsons, sharpening the question of whether one all-big-gun ship justified concentrating so much armament. This allowed the Navy to test a revolutionary battleship concept while retaining a large existing force and the option to change course if results disappointed.
