Ian Ballantyne's book follows Royal Navy ships named London, including the County-class cruiser. The chapter list connects earlier wars and imperial policing with the Bismarck hunt, Arctic convoys and later service in the Gulf and Balkans. Photographs illustrate the ships and their refits. Clarke discloses that he has worked for Ballantyne and writes for the magazine he edits. Ballantyne prefers the paperback, but only the hardback is examined here.
