HMS Kenya returns for Korean War bombardment patrols

Postwar modernization and Far East reactivation put Kenya in position for coastal fire support when the Korean War begins.

Notes

Kenya received updated radar and twin 40 mm anti-aircraft mountings before returning from reserve to replace HMS London on the Far East Station. That timing put the cruiser in the region when the Korean War began. She bombarded an island position for a planned landing by two hundred South Korean troops, but the landing force never arrived. The failed operation shows how naval fire support depended on coordination ashore. Later patrols off Inchon combined repeated bombardment with searches and routine station work, broken by visits to Hong Kong and a Singapore refit. Modernized gun cruisers still had practical value for presence and sustained coastal operations even after fleet air defence had moved beyond their original design.
