Janus at Anzio: 500 shells or 500 salvos?

Janus's bombardment raises a distinction between individual rounds, complete salvos and ammunition replenishment.

Notes

Janus provided gunfire support off Anzio on 23 January 1944. The estimate offered here is about 500 shells, while claims of 500 complete salvos are rejected as incompatible with normal ammunition capacity. A complete salvo from six guns uses six rounds, so the two descriptions imply very different expenditure. Extra ammunition could be carried in unusual spaces with the intention of firing it first during a planned bombardment. The total could also include returning to replenish and then resuming fire support. Those possibilities explain a large expenditure without establishing that the ship fired 500 complete salvos.
