HMS Jamaica at the Barents Sea and North Cape

Jamaica helped protect Arctic convoys, fought Admiral Hipper's force, and later closed in to finish Scharnhorst with gunfire and torpedoes.

Notes

At the Barents Sea, Jamaica and Sheffield arrived after destroyers had held off the German attack, hit Admiral Hipper, and helped preserve the convoy. Heavy use required replacement of Jamaica's main-gun barrels in March 1943. Her light anti-aircraft armament also gained six powered twin and four single 20 mm mountings. At North Cape Jamaica approached with Duke of York after Belfast, Sheffield, and Norfolk had forced Scharnhorst to turn for home. She scored with her third salvo, resumed fire after destroyer torpedoes slowed the battleship, and then launched her own torpedoes during the final attack. Later service included further Arctic operations, raids on Tirpitz, the Korean War, and an appearance as HMS Exeter in The Battle of the River Plate.
