How the false HMS Invincible sinking story spread

The false claim that HMS Invincible had been sunk came from Argentine propaganda. Newspapers repeated it, but many also carried British denials.

Notes

A persistent Falklands War story claimed that HMS Invincible had been sunk. The claim originated in Argentine propaganda and was later repeated by some newspapers. Many of those reports also carried statements from the Royal Navy and British government that the carrier had survived. Contemporary reporting therefore carried both the propaganda claim and the official denial, yet the story persisted.
