Imperieuse was completed in 1886 and later served as flagship on the China Station from 1889 to 1894. She then moved to the Pacific Station for 1896-1899 before undergoing extensive repairs at Chatham in 1900. In 1905 the older cruiser became Sapphire II, a depot ship supporting destroyers. This kept the hull useful after it left front-line cruiser service. Her original name was restored in 1909, and she was sold for breaking up in 1913.
