Holcombe was torpedoed by U-593 in December 1943 while escorting KMS 34 with Tynedale. After Tynedale was sunk, the escorts began searching for the submarine, but U-593 struck again and sank Holcombe. USS Wainwright and HMS Calpe subsequently found and dealt with the U-boat. Fewer than half of Holcombe's crew were lost despite the rapid sinking, evidence in the video of how well Alexander Stephen and Sons had built her.
