HMS Gorgon represents a larger paddle-driven Royal Navy warship built while steam propulsion was still being worked into familiar sailing forms. The ship participated in the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado, where an Anglo-French squadron forced its way past Argentine coastal batteries, troops, and gunboats. Although the naval force won the engagement, the damage and political consequences demonstrated that penetrating inland waters against a government's wishes was neither safe nor strategically simple. This passage is useful for seeing how propulsion experiments quickly became entangled with river warfare, coercive diplomacy, and regional politics.
